What is Circumcision Surgery?

Male circumcision is the surgical removal of the foreskin, which is the retractable fold of skin that covers the end of the penis. It is most commonly carried out for medical reasons, such as when the foreskin is too tight to be pulled back (retracted) over the glans, known as phimosis. Circumcision can also be performed for religious or cultural reasons. Circumcision is a relatively simple procedure that involves removing the foreskin just behind the head of the penis using a scalpel or surgical scissors. The procedure generally takes about 10 minutes. It takes up to 6 weeks for the penis to fully heal after circumcision.

How You Prepare for Male Circumcision Surgery

Proper preparation for circumcision surgery helps ensure better outcomes and recovery. These guidelines apply primarily to adult circumcision; preparation for infant circumcision will be different.

Food and Medicines

  • For adults and older children under general anesthesia, fast for at least 8 hours before the procedure. For local anesthesia, lighter dietary restrictions may apply.
  • Inform your doctor about all medications and supplements you take regularly, especially blood thinners or aspirin products.
  • You may need to temporarily stop certain medications 5-7 days before surgery as directed by your doctor.
  • Avoid alcohol for at least 48 hours before the procedure.
  • For infant circumcision, follow feeding guidelines provided by your pediatrician.

What to Expect

During & After Surgery
  • The procedure typically takes 15-30 minutes for adults and about 15 minutes for infants.
  • For adults, local anesthesia is most common, though general anesthesia may be used in some cases.
  • The surgery is typically performed as an outpatient procedure with same-day discharge.
  • Some swelling, bruising, and discomfort are normal after the procedure.
  • Adult patients should plan for about 2-3 weeks of healing time before resuming sexual activity.
  • Follow-up appointments may be scheduled to check healing progress, particularly for adult patients.

Frequentlly Asked Questions About Surgery Second Opinions

Get expert answers about our second opinion process for surgery, specialist consultations, and how our medical experts can help confirm your diagnosis and treatment plan.

Q: What details should I provide for circumcision?

A: Please share the reason for circumcision (e.g., phimosis, recurrent infections), any symptoms, prior treatments, and doctor's recommendation.

Q: Is circumcision always required for foreskin problems?

A: No. Many foreskin issues can be treated with creams or minor procedures. Surgery is generally reserved for recurring or severe problems.

Q: Are there risks in postponing circumcision?

A: Possibly. Delaying may cause ongoing infections or urination issues, but not all cases are urgent.

Q: Can circumcision affect sexual function or sensitivity?

A: In most cases, sexual function remains normal. Some people report reduced sensitivity, especially if too much foreskin is removed.

Q: What is recovery like after circumcision?

A: Most people recover in 7–10 days with some swelling or discomfort. Full healing may take a few weeks.
